The fun of subscription boxes

If you are like me, you have a routine for yourself when it comes to skincare and makeup. You know what works for you and you dont want to deviate from those products. You seldom want to try new things. And you certainly dont want to ‘waste’ your money on products that might not work for you.

THATS where the fun of getting subscription boxes comes in.

There is a subscription box for almost everything these days….whether its for your pet, your movie collection, or even for those who collect toys. This post is just going to be about personal care subscriptions.

In the past two years I have tried beauty boxes from Target, Walmart, Ipsy, Birchbox, and Sephora. I dont get the Target or Birchbox beauty boxes any longer, but I did like the items Ive received from them. Most of the boxes I subscribe to are inexpensive (around $10 a month) and contain 5 products.

Ive tried so many products that have become my holy grail due to receiving a deluxe sample in a subscription box.

Do you subscribe to any beauty boxes?

12 pans of Christmas – Skincare Edition

I love panning projects where entire communities come together and participate. This one is no exception. This project was created by Jacquelyn Lovene on youtube (Jacquelyn Lovene). There are loads of other channels as well as instagram accounts participating in this project.

Since I am not actively panning anything at the moment, I decided it would be a perfect time to see if I could get thru some of my deluxe sized and almost-finished skin care items.

In no particular order:

  • Strivectin Eye Serum – I love this stuff but its now the oldest eye serum I have. I use this mainly in the mornings.
  • Origins Gin-Zing Eye Cream – I started using this at night but stopped out of pure laziness.
  • GlamGlow Volcasmic Moisterizer – This is the second or third deluxe sample Ive received in a Sephora Play Box. I opened this right after I got my facial because I needed the extra moisture, and now that the weather is cooling down, it won’t look too greasy on my skin.
  • Origins Drink-Up Intensive Overnight Mask – This was previously in another skin care project but I couldn’t finish it before the weather got hot. Im about half way thru this deluxe sample.
  • BareMinerals Skinlongetivity Vital Power Infusion Serum – I LOVE this serum. Im working thru some other serum samples along with using this, but it definitely will be re-purchased.
  • Curel Hydratherapy Wet Skin Moisturizer – I like the Jergens version of this more but I probably only have a couple of uses left in this. Ill be glad to see it go.
  • Delectable Lotion – This claims to be a body lotion, but my skin needs more moisture than this lotion can give me, so Ive been using it as a hand lotion. Im about a third of the way thru this, but Id like to have this gone by the end of the year.
  • Lush Volcano Foot Mask (sample and full size) – My full size has a Use By date of September 27th on it, so I need to really finish this up. Its almost November now!
  • Peel off masks Freeman – I have two of these. One is halfway used the other hasnt been opened. Im working on the Sweet Tea & Lemon and I have a Renewing Cucumber.
  • Purlisse Charcoal and Licorice Sheet Mask & Flashpatch Eye Hydrogels – Im not a fan of sheet masks but I received this in a subscription box and because the weather has changed a bit, this won’t make me too oily.
  • Fresh Umbrian Clay mask & Glam Glow Supermud mask (I have 3 of these) – I prefer this type of mask. I really need to start using the masks I have so I can experiment with some others out there.
  • Exfoliants – Real Chemistry 3 minute peel, Skin Inc peel, and Hanalei powder cleanser – These have been sitting around and need to be used up. I think I might have used the deluxe samples once. As with the masks, I want to use these up and move onto other products.

Before you get that European Facial

Many of us enjoy doing face masks at home, whether they are sheets masks or peel off masks, they give our skin some extra pampering. At some point, you may want to visit a spa for what seems like that extra pampering and get a European facial.

Now, Im not here to talk you out of such a wonderful experience….I just want you to be informed of what could potentially go wrong and how to avoid having a negative experience. There are some very horrible worse-case scenarios posted online about skin reactions, acne, etc and Im not going to cover that here since I dont have first-hand knowledge of that.

What I want you to be knowledgeable about is YOU and YOUR skin when speaking to your esthetician prior to your facial so that you won’t have a negative experience.

You should know your skin type – i.e. oily, dry, combination. You should inform your esthetician what type of products you currently use or that you have had issues with prior to finding what works for you.

Most European facials include a chemical exfoliant that follows the initial cleansing. If you have exfoliated in the 3 days prior to your facial, you may want to inform your esthetician. I personally cannot exfoliate the entire week prior to using a chemical exfoliant because otherwise my face will be beet red for days following the treatment.

If you have breathing problems in humidity, please inform your esthetician. They can modify your facial to use a warm towel or just not place the steam that close to your face.

If you have ANY known allergies, let your esthetician know during your consultation. I have both food and environmental allergies and many products used during your facial may contain these products. Prior to my first facial, I had no idea that products containing cucumber could trigger a ragweed reaction.

Do not hesitate to contact your esthetician or even a physician if you have a reaction to products that were used. The earlier you treat, the quicker you will ‘recover’.

September Empties

I just realized that this post never got published, so my apologies. I’ll chalk this up to user error since I have others just sitting in my drafts folder. I’ll be pushing those out until I get up to date.

I haven’t used a lot of products up this past month.

1) I’ve just recently started tracking my sugar scrub usage. I think I go thru one a month. This month I finished up the Shea Sugar Scrub in Original Shea. I alternate between two different scents.

2) I received the Kleem Vitamin C serum for purpose of a review. I did enjoy using it, but for the price, I can get a higher end serum. I used this as a morning serum and it lasted about 6 months.

3) I received the Ulta brow tint in one of those large Ulta sets and I had forgotten about it. I might have used it once but it’s old and I don’t feel comfortable using it so I’m decluttering it.

4) I love the Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream perfume. I got this sample with an online order. I already have a roller ball of it.

5) The Clinique turnaround daytime moisturizer is not something I would purchase. I received this in a Clinique set.

6) My Sephora play box a few months ago contained the GlamGlow Volcasmic moisturizer pictured here. I did recently receive another in a recent box. I could not use this during day because I’m oily, but it felt nice on the skin at night.

7) My first beauty blender experience was this tiny one I received in my Sephora play box. I’m not a fan of it because it’s too hard to hold. I used it a couple of times but I just don’t like it.

8) My last Sephora eyebrow pencil.  I do like this pencil but they really need to have a spooly on the other end instead of this comb. I have a few Anastasia pencils to go thru so I won’t be repurchasing another for awhile.

9) As usual, I have a couple 120 ml bottles of Deadline Limeade and Abetting and 100 ml bottle of Maddscope juice. These are my two favorite juices for vaping.

10) Lastly, I have 3 packs of Claritin Ready-tabs. My allergies have been especially bad this year.  Hopefully the weather cools so I can stop needing the take them.

Did you finish anything this month?

April empties

I finished a bunch of things during the month of April. Below is a listing of those items as well as a photo of everything.

  1. I am decluttering two samples of the Marc Jacobs Remarcable foundation. They are the two lightest shades and oddly enough, they are too light for me.
  2. I finished the Sephora solid cleanser. I like using this to clean my makeup brushes. I used to use baby shampoo and olive oil but using a solid is much quicker and easier. I have repurchased.
  3. I finished a sample of Lush’s Don’t Look at Me fresh face mask. This stuff smells like Fruity Pebbles cereal. It’s a great exfoliater and it brightens my skin. I will purchase once I use up my other face masks because this one expires relatively quick.
  4. I used up the Ole Henriksen sheer transformation moisturizer. I LOVE this moisturizer. It works wonderfully under makeup. This was in my Skincare Sample Showdown Project Pan.
  5. I also used up the Belif true cream aqua bomb moisturizer. While I did enjoy using this, it was thicker than the Ole Henriksen. It does have a pleasant smell and sinks in quickly, but I don’t see myself purchasing it. This was also in my Skincare Sample Showdown Project Pan.
  6. I finished the Dionis white jasmine and shea hand cream. I love this hand cream. It has a wonderful scent and moisturizes my dry hands. I have already purchased a replacement.
  7. I have finished the Lush peppermint foot cream in what might be record time! This stuff makes my feet feel alive and it definitely moisturizes my feet. I have already repurchased.
  8. I used up the Sephora brow pencil. I really like the Sephora pencil. The only real flaw is the end that has a comb and not a spoolie. They are about $12. I do have a back-up so I won’t be repurchasing right now but I would if I didn’t have back-up brow products.
  9. I used up a Neutrogena makeup remover wipe pack. I do like these but I prefer the pack that’s green. I do have a couple back-up packs, so I don’t have to repurchase yet.
  10. I used up a Simple cleansing facial wipe packet. These are just a sample pack of 7 that I received in a subscription box. I think they changed the wipe because I didnt used to like these, but they worked a lot better than I remember.
  11. I completely killed two Revlon nail files. I use one for my hands and one for my toe nails. I have purchased two new files.
  12. I finished the Vichy cleanser. I had never used a product from Vichy before and this was a mild cleanser. I did like using it but it did not remove makeup despite the claim that this was a one-step cleanser. I would not repurchase.
  13. The Estee Edit oil cleanser was a complete surprise to me. I’ve been using some other cleansing oils that do not perform as well as this one, and once I use those other oil cleansers up, I will consider purchasing this one.
  14. The Cetaphil cleanser is one of my favorites. I usually refill this small travel bottle but I somehow ruined the threading in this bottle. I like using this as my second cleanse after removing my makeup but I’ve removed makeup with this cleanser before. It’s very gentle on the skin and leaves your face feeling clean. I have a large pump bottle that I’ve refilled this smaller one but when it runs out, it will be repurchased.
  15. The Dove dry oil moisture Moroccan Arian oil body wash was awesome. It didn’t leave a soapy feeling behind and smelled fantastic. I have some other body washes but it’s definitely one I would consider purchasing.
  16. What sort of empties post would this be without a couple bottles of Scopejuice? I went hard this month finishing up THREE BOTTLES! Somehow I managed to not have anything else to vape but this juice. I would and have repurchased.
