The fun of subscription boxes

If you are like me, you have a routine for yourself when it comes to skincare and makeup. You know what works for you and you dont want to deviate from those products. You seldom want to try new things. And you certainly dont want to ‘waste’ your money on products that might not work for you.

THATS where the fun of getting subscription boxes comes in.

There is a subscription box for almost everything these days….whether its for your pet, your movie collection, or even for those who collect toys. This post is just going to be about personal care subscriptions.

In the past two years I have tried beauty boxes from Target, Walmart, Ipsy, Birchbox, and Sephora. I dont get the Target or Birchbox beauty boxes any longer, but I did like the items Ive received from them. Most of the boxes I subscribe to are inexpensive (around $10 a month) and contain 5 products.

Ive tried so many products that have become my holy grail due to receiving a deluxe sample in a subscription box.

Do you subscribe to any beauty boxes?

12 pans of Christmas – Skincare Edition

I love panning projects where entire communities come together and participate. This one is no exception. This project was created by Jacquelyn Lovene on youtube (Jacquelyn Lovene). There are loads of other channels as well as instagram accounts participating in this project.

Since I am not actively panning anything at the moment, I decided it would be a perfect time to see if I could get thru some of my deluxe sized and almost-finished skin care items.

In no particular order:

  • Strivectin Eye Serum – I love this stuff but its now the oldest eye serum I have. I use this mainly in the mornings.
  • Origins Gin-Zing Eye Cream – I started using this at night but stopped out of pure laziness.
  • GlamGlow Volcasmic Moisterizer – This is the second or third deluxe sample Ive received in a Sephora Play Box. I opened this right after I got my facial because I needed the extra moisture, and now that the weather is cooling down, it won’t look too greasy on my skin.
  • Origins Drink-Up Intensive Overnight Mask – This was previously in another skin care project but I couldn’t finish it before the weather got hot. Im about half way thru this deluxe sample.
  • BareMinerals Skinlongetivity Vital Power Infusion Serum – I LOVE this serum. Im working thru some other serum samples along with using this, but it definitely will be re-purchased.
  • Curel Hydratherapy Wet Skin Moisturizer – I like the Jergens version of this more but I probably only have a couple of uses left in this. Ill be glad to see it go.
  • Delectable Lotion – This claims to be a body lotion, but my skin needs more moisture than this lotion can give me, so Ive been using it as a hand lotion. Im about a third of the way thru this, but Id like to have this gone by the end of the year.
  • Lush Volcano Foot Mask (sample and full size) – My full size has a Use By date of September 27th on it, so I need to really finish this up. Its almost November now!
  • Peel off masks Freeman – I have two of these. One is halfway used the other hasnt been opened. Im working on the Sweet Tea & Lemon and I have a Renewing Cucumber.
  • Purlisse Charcoal and Licorice Sheet Mask & Flashpatch Eye Hydrogels – Im not a fan of sheet masks but I received this in a subscription box and because the weather has changed a bit, this won’t make me too oily.
  • Fresh Umbrian Clay mask & Glam Glow Supermud mask (I have 3 of these) – I prefer this type of mask. I really need to start using the masks I have so I can experiment with some others out there.
  • Exfoliants – Real Chemistry 3 minute peel, Skin Inc peel, and Hanalei powder cleanser – These have been sitting around and need to be used up. I think I might have used the deluxe samples once. As with the masks, I want to use these up and move onto other products.

Before you get that European Facial

Many of us enjoy doing face masks at home, whether they are sheets masks or peel off masks, they give our skin some extra pampering. At some point, you may want to visit a spa for what seems like that extra pampering and get a European facial.

Now, Im not here to talk you out of such a wonderful experience….I just want you to be informed of what could potentially go wrong and how to avoid having a negative experience. There are some very horrible worse-case scenarios posted online about skin reactions, acne, etc and Im not going to cover that here since I dont have first-hand knowledge of that.

What I want you to be knowledgeable about is YOU and YOUR skin when speaking to your esthetician prior to your facial so that you won’t have a negative experience.

You should know your skin type – i.e. oily, dry, combination. You should inform your esthetician what type of products you currently use or that you have had issues with prior to finding what works for you.

Most European facials include a chemical exfoliant that follows the initial cleansing. If you have exfoliated in the 3 days prior to your facial, you may want to inform your esthetician. I personally cannot exfoliate the entire week prior to using a chemical exfoliant because otherwise my face will be beet red for days following the treatment.

If you have breathing problems in humidity, please inform your esthetician. They can modify your facial to use a warm towel or just not place the steam that close to your face.

If you have ANY known allergies, let your esthetician know during your consultation. I have both food and environmental allergies and many products used during your facial may contain these products. Prior to my first facial, I had no idea that products containing cucumber could trigger a ragweed reaction.

Do not hesitate to contact your esthetician or even a physician if you have a reaction to products that were used. The earlier you treat, the quicker you will ‘recover’.

September Empties

I just realized that this post never got published, so my apologies. I’ll chalk this up to user error since I have others just sitting in my drafts folder. I’ll be pushing those out until I get up to date.

I haven’t used a lot of products up this past month.

1) I’ve just recently started tracking my sugar scrub usage. I think I go thru one a month. This month I finished up the Shea Sugar Scrub in Original Shea. I alternate between two different scents.

2) I received the Kleem Vitamin C serum for purpose of a review. I did enjoy using it, but for the price, I can get a higher end serum. I used this as a morning serum and it lasted about 6 months.

3) I received the Ulta brow tint in one of those large Ulta sets and I had forgotten about it. I might have used it once but it’s old and I don’t feel comfortable using it so I’m decluttering it.

4) I love the Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream perfume. I got this sample with an online order. I already have a roller ball of it.

5) The Clinique turnaround daytime moisturizer is not something I would purchase. I received this in a Clinique set.

6) My Sephora play box a few months ago contained the GlamGlow Volcasmic moisturizer pictured here. I did recently receive another in a recent box. I could not use this during day because I’m oily, but it felt nice on the skin at night.

7) My first beauty blender experience was this tiny one I received in my Sephora play box. I’m not a fan of it because it’s too hard to hold. I used it a couple of times but I just don’t like it.

8) My last Sephora eyebrow pencil.  I do like this pencil but they really need to have a spooly on the other end instead of this comb. I have a few Anastasia pencils to go thru so I won’t be repurchasing another for awhile.

9) As usual, I have a couple 120 ml bottles of Deadline Limeade and Abetting and 100 ml bottle of Maddscope juice. These are my two favorite juices for vaping.

10) Lastly, I have 3 packs of Claritin Ready-tabs. My allergies have been especially bad this year.  Hopefully the weather cools so I can stop needing the take them.

April Sephora Play Box ‘controversy’

Ive been a Sephora Play Box subscriber for about a year now, and for the last few weeks Ive been hearing alot of people online complain about this months products. I hardly ever get what I see others unbox and I hadn’t seen anything ‘offensive’ unboxed when Ive searched.

Im actually pretty happy with the items I do receive. So, I waited for my package to arrive. This months box showed up a little bit earlier than they usually do, so I was quite happy about that right off the bat.

Pictured below are the items I received.

  • Sephora waterproof eye makeup remover – Ive only heard great things about this product, and I believe I picked up a trial size in the checkout line. I dont really recall anything about it, but Im excited to try it.
  • Daisy from Marc Jacobs – I really like the Daisy perfumes. Daisy Dream is my favorite but this one is very nice.
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer – I think this was one of the first primers on the market. It didnt really do much for me back then, but Ill try it again and see if it works now.
  • Kate Somerville exfoliator – Im really excited to try this. Ive been meaning to pick up something from her line from some time now but havent yet.
  • Makeup Forever Aqua XL pencil eyeliner – I LOVE this eyeliner in my water line. I got one a while ago as a point perk and Im almost finished it and I had it on my wish list, but now I dont have to buy it yet!
  • Peter Thomas Roth water drench moisturizer – For someone with oily skin, this scares me, but in my ‘research’ online, Ive heard hyaluronic acids are good for mature and oily skin!

After receiving my Sephora Play Box, Im perplexed about why people are upset. Even the variations Ive seen online aren’t bad in my opinion.

Do you subscribe to Sephora Play? If so, are you upset about the products you received this month?

March Empties

I dont usually post on Saturdays, but I missed posting this yesterday.

Here are my thoughts on my March empties:

  1. Garner Micellar Water – I love this stuff! I use it to remove my eye makeup with a cotton round. I have already purchased a replacement.
  2. Eyeko Fat Eyeliner – I had this in a MakeUp Use Up for this year. I received this in a Birchbox and while I enjoyed using it, I would not repurchased because I prefer other brands.
  3. Eyeko Eyeliner – I had this in a MakeUp Use Up for this year. I got this item in a Birchbox and I did enjoy using it, but I would not repurchase because there are other brands I prefer.
  4. Elf Eyeliner – This is another item I had in a Makeup Use Up for this year. This is one of my favorite eyeliners. I have not repurchased, because I am trying out another Elf eyeliner that many people rave about.
  5. Dionis hand cream (White Jasmine and Shea) – I love this hand cream. This moisturizes my skin and smells fantastic. I have already repurchased.
  6. Mane and Tail shampoo – I hated this shampoo. It seemed to tangle my very short hair and I did not enjoy the scent.
  7. Covergirl Clump Crusher mascara – My holy grail mascara. I love the wand and you can’t beat the price. I already have a replacement.
  8. Milk Mascara – I received this in a beauty box and ended up really liking the way it performed. I would consider repurchasing.
  9. Scope Juice (MaddScope) – I am always buying this stuff. Its my favorite e-juice.
  10. ROC Neck Cream – I had this in a project pan. Im glad I finished it because it smelled horrible.
  11. Mac Prep and Prime – I had his in a project pan. I love using this in cooler months and I would definitely repurchase if I didnt have a bunch of samples to always use.
  12. Pack of cotton rounds – I use these with my Micellar Water to remove my eye makeup. I have repurchased.
  13. Alterna Caviar Shampoo and Conditioner – I liked the way these smelled but I saw no difference in my hair. Foil packets dont always give you the best results since you might get two uses out of them.
  14. Matrix Biolage Recover Shampoo and Conditioner – I really dont have much of an opinion on these except that the shampoo has a better scent than the conditioner.

So those were my empties for the month of March. Im actually impressed at how many samples Ive been able to move out of my collection already this year.

Mac Cosmetics Haul

If you are a Mac Select member, you may have received an email regarding their 25% off sale that was in-store AND online. I basically ran to my favorite Mac store and picked out the items pictured below. I dont normally purchase this much when I shop at Mac, but when a sale like this happens, I had to splurge.

My painterly paint pot has seen better days, so I picked another one up. This is my favorite eye primer (even though I do use others).

I love the travel size skin care products, so I picked up a travel sized Strobe Cream and Oil Control lotion.

I also picked up a pack of Select Sheer puffs. When I first tried using the puff included in the Select Sheer compact, I thought it was ridiculous but Ive really come to love it and I even use it with their powder foundation products.

I was able to get a sample of the In Extreme Dimension mascara while in-store as well as a sample of the Studio Fix liquid foundation. Somehow Ive never used these items before.

And last, but certainly not least -drum roll please-

My new X15 palette that I made myself!!!! Unfortunately, the palette and insert was not included in the 25% off sale, but instead of paying $6 for each shadow, we paid $4.50.

The shadows left to right are:

Top row: Rice Paper (I have this in pot form but its a great shade to set your primer with), Blanc Type, Yogurt, Orb, Naked Lunch

Row 2: Soft Brown (This is a great shade to put in your crease if you wear alot of neutrals), Texture, Haux, Wedge, Corduroy

Bottom Row: Sable, Coppering (my favorite lid shade), Amber Lights, Cranberry, Antiqued

Sorry for the mess on the palette already. I got these Saturday and have been using them! fullsizeoutput_5cc
